Project Overview
Why a Genetic Genealogy Project on the Carvajal Family?
I created this project to better map and understand the relationships between the multiple lineages of Carvajal families in the Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands, and the Americas. Although my dissertation focuses on the Carvajal family in Spain, and my research interests extend into the Americas, this genetic genealogy study is not a part of my dissertation research. This genetic research is one of my personal interests that may, at some point, turn into an academic article discussing Carvajal migration from Spain to the Americas.
Genetic genealogy has very specific limitations -- I would encourage you to read these short articles at the University of Texas at Austin--
Deep Roots? New DNA tests may reveal your ancestry, but researchers urge caution when interpreting results.
Researchers Underscore Limitations of Genetic Ancestry Tests, Urge Caution When Interpreting Results
As a historian of early modern Spain and the transatlantic migration of the Carvajal family, I am particularly interested in encouraging Carvajal men that live or are descended from these regions to participate in the project.
The Long-Term Questions this Project Hopes to Answer (through 2010)
Those critical issues and questions that I think are of importance to the history of the Carvajal family are:
1. Do any Carvajal lineages have a Sephardic Jewish background?
2. How do North and South American lineages relate to each other?
3. How do American and Iberian (Spanish) lineages interrelate?
4. Can migration patterns from Iberia through the Atlantic world be tracked through genetics?
5. Have Carvajal men and their descendents intermarried with matrilineal Jewish lineages?
